    Description

1930’s Oakland Restaurant Business Card - Chicago, Illinois
Offered for your consideration is a small business card for use by a restaurant in Chicago, Illinois, apparently during the Century of Progress International Exposition of 1933 (the Chicago World’s Fair). A small design at the center presents a smiling waitress balancing a tray of food on one hand, “
    SERVICE with a smile
” printed above, all enclosed in a square. Below this is printed “
    OAKLAND RESTAURANT
    /
    DELICIOUS, WHOLESOME FOOD SERVED
    /
    HOME COOKING – REASONABLE PRICES
    /
    WORLD’S FAIR VISITORS WELCOME
”, with the last three lines slightly smaller than the name of the establishment. The restaurant’s address is listed as “
    835 E. 39
    TH
    ST.
    ” in “
    CHICAGO
”, noted at the bottom, to the left and right of center, respectively. The telephone number is printed at the upper left, while the statement “
    ALWAYS OPEN
” can be seen at the upper right. All of the printing is accomplished in dark blue ink, on a light green geometric background. The back of the card is blank. Though not dated, the reference to fair visitors being welcome leads the seller to believe that it was issued in the 1933, at the time of the Century of Progress International Exposition. An unusual item to add to any World’s Fair collection. Presumably not many were saved (it was probably not at the top of most people’s souvenir list). This would look great framed with a period illustration of the restaurant and a menu (if one still exists).
The presently offered item exhibits signs of very minor use, or possibly just period mishandling. Toning is noted across the surface, especially on the blank back, imparting to the stock a beige to light brown appearance. This toning is somewhat darker at the edges, with several scattered stains noted as well (these are relatively small and do not affect the overall eye-appeal of the piece). No folds are readily apparent, though a few edge flaws are noted for accuracy. Measuring approximately 2 x 3½ inches, this piece should elicit spirited bidding form those collectors of World’s Fair or Chicago memorabilia.
A .99 charge will be added to the winning bid for postage and insurance.
A .00 charge will be added to any item picked up in person at our physical location.
If you have any questions regarding this item, please ask before purchasing.
