Description
A glass paperweight 4 x 2.5" of the "Golden Temple of Joel by Night" from the Chicago World's Fair (Century of Progress) in 1933. The green felt back is intact, has water stain on right side of picture (see pictures or ask questions), and a minor rough spot top, right edge... could be a glass-making flaw. The Golden Temple of Jehol, originally built in 1767, (spelled Joel in the paperweight) is a replica of the celebrated Chinese Lama Temple and the seat of worship of Manchu emperors. It was shipped in 28,000 pieces by Dr. Sven Hedid, the famour Swedish explorer-author, for Vincent Bendix of Chicago. The Temple was also exhibited at the NY World's Fair until 1939, then donated. Pieces still remain in Indiana.
