    Description

    George Washington (1732-1799)
, 1st President of the Unites States, produced this clip via his often used letterpress device at Mount Vernon (his home) in July 1797.  The clip contains Washington's actual handwritten ink that was physically transferred from its original handwritten letter.
The clip produced by George Washington reads as follows:  "
    I am....
    ".
The offered clip was cut from a larger, fantastic letterpress document that George Washington produced on July 31, 1797 in which he was writing to his former U.S. Attorney General Charles Lee who served in his presidential administration.
We personally cut the offered clip from that very document.
A letterpress is the author’s own ink and exact writing pressed onto another sheet that is thinner. It is a
method of applying plain moistened paper with pressure to a freshly written letter so the ink from the original would be offset onto the new thin paper sheet.
Outside of institutions these are very rare.
The document was purchased by the current sellers from University Archives, a world renowned seller
and authentication service of historical documents.
There is a transcript of this actual letter at the National Archives (founders.gov), which can be viewed here:
