Texaco was formed when four Texas men discovered oil at Spindletop near Beaumont, Texas, in 1901. The simple logo of a red star on a white background harkens back to the Lone Star of Texas. In 1932, Texaco introduced Fire Chief gasoline, a higher quality fuel that met the octane requirements for fire engines. It was dispensed in the traditional red pumps at Texaco stations nationwide.
This miniature gas station model features a unique hexagon shape and beautiful color. The red tile roof and bright blues, yellows, and greens give a nod to the Southwestern architecture, heavily influenced by Latin American style. The red and green gas pumps, colorful trash barrels, and hanging "TEXACO" and "THE TEXAS COMPANY" signs make it hard to mistake the function of this fantastic building. Over the main windows and entryway are colored Art Deco windows - perhaps stained glass or leadlight windows so popular at the time. This piece is perfect for small city displays or a diehard Texaco collector!
It is close to HO scale, but I am not sure. The gas pump is 1" high.
From the box: "When the first Model T rolled off the assembly line, American life rolled off in a new direction. In fact, it changed the American way of life forever. Gas stations sprung up on the newly paved highways, not the sterile, impersonal self-service stations we have today. In those halcyon days (when the service attendant not only filled the tank, but washed your windshield, checked your oil and put air in your tires) each station was an architectural marvel. From the indigenous architecture of the Texaco stations with their striking trademark and the fabulous Art Deco designs of the "independents", to the magnificent details of our two Limited Editions, this important addition to our Roadside, U.S.A. Collection is a "must" for all serious nostalgia buffs. Artist/designer David Stravitz painstakingly re-creates these replicas capturing every bit of dazzling detail. We cordially invite you to take a ride with us. Don't worry, there's no fear of running out of gas; not when you're traveling along Roadside, U.S.A."
From the brochure: "Texaco No. 1 - Circa 1920's Dallas, Texas. With its hexagon-shaped red shingled roof, this early Texaco Station had the feel of a Mexican Hacienda which was a popular style of architecture in the southwestern United States."
